Telecoms can breathe a sigh of relief…at least for now: “Even as it rolls out a local wireless Internet service in the city where it is based, Google says it has no plans to position itself as a national provider of such services.”
That’s too bad. I was hoping for a smarter, faster alternative to the slow, stupid telcos and cable tv companies. Wireless technologies always trump wired technologies in speed and adaptability. Though the gap is narrowing, and TV cable is gaining back some losses to satellite TV, the unwired in general start with a fresh infrastructure and culture, and win on adaptability and customer service.
If Google doesn’t step up with a nationwide wireless broadband alternative, I’m sure someone else will. It’s very do-able from a technology standpoint and it’s too big an opportunity for someone with the money and the know-how to miss.
